What is the Pangea Maths Competition?
The Pangea Maths Competition is a reputed international mathematics competition organised in 15+ European countries and is now being held in Ireland for the sixth time. It is a fun and challenging competition designed to encourage logical thinking, problem-solving, and enjoyment of maths among primary and secondary school students.
What are the aims of the competition?
The competition aims to:
– Promote a positive attitude towards mathematics
– Build confidence and self-belief in students
– Encourage logical and independent thinking
– Support students of all ability levels
Who organises Pangea Maths Competition Ireland?
The competition in Ireland is organised by Pangea Maths Competition Ireland, in partnership with the Pangea Maths Europe network.
Who can take part?
– Primary Schools: 5th & 6th Class
– Secondary Schools: 2nd Year & 3th Year
Participation is open to all recognised primary and secondary schools in Ireland.
Can students register individually?
No. Students cannot apply individually. All registrations must be completed by a teacher or authorised school representative.
Is there a cost to participate?
No. Participation is completely free of charge for schools and students.
How do schools register?
Teachers register their school or classes online via the official registration form on the website. Once registered, teachers receive all necessary instructions and materials by email.

How does the competition work?
The competition takes place in two rounds:
– Round 1: In-school round completed during normal maths class time
– Round 2: National Final for qualified students
What happens in Round 1?
– 20 multiple-choice questions
– 40 minutes to complete
– Completed in school during maths class
– Supervised by the teacher
– Questions focus on logical thinking and problem-solving
Is math difficult?
The first round is designed so that every student can succeed. At least half of the questions are accessible to all students. Questions become more challenging in later rounds for those who qualify.
What kind of maths is involved?
The maths is curriculum-based and similar to what students learn in school. No content beyond the school curriculum is required.
How are the results announced?
Results are usually announced 2–3 weeks after Round 1. Teachers or authorised school representative are contacted by email.
Who qualifies for the National Final?
The top-performing students from each year group qualify. Approximately 30 students per grade level advance to the final.
Where and when is the National Final held?

What happens at the National Final?
– A set of more challenging questions
– 40 minutes to complete
– Followed by an award ceremony celebrating student achievement
Do all students receive a certificate?
Yes. All participating students receive a Certificate of Participation.
What prizes are awarded at the National Final?
🥇 Gold Medal: €100 voucher + certificate
🥈 Silver Medal: €75 voucher + certificate
🥉 Bronze Medal: €50 voucher + certificate
All finalists receive certificates and prizes, with medals awarded to winners.
How do students receive the question papers?
Question papers and instructions for Round 1 are sent to teachers by email.
How is the competition supervised?
Teachers supervise the in-school round during normal class time to ensure fair and independent work.
Are photographs taken during the competition?
Photos or videos may be taken during the national final or award ceremony. Media is used only where appropriate consent has been provided.
