HOW THE COMPETITION WORKS

Pangea Maths is a well-established and highly regarded international competition, organised across 15+ European countries and now running in Ireland for the sixth time.

The competition is designed to be accessible, motivating, and enjoyable for all students, while remaining simple and practical for teachers to run during normal school hours.

The competition takes place in two rounds, with opportunities for students to progress to a national final.

🏫 ABOUT THE COMPETITION

The Pangea Maths Competition is a fun and intellectually stimulating challenge for primary and secondary students that brings together with a shared interest in problem-solving and logical thinking.

Beyond developing mathematical skills, Pangea encourages:

  • Confidence and resilience
  • Independent thinking
  • A positive attitude towards maths

By ensuring that at least half of the questions in the first round are accessible to all students, Pangea helps build self-belief while still providing meaningful challenges for mathematically gifted students.

Round 1 – In-School Round

  • Completed during regular maths class time
  • Takes place in your own school
  • Supervised by the class teacher
  • 20 multiple-choice questions
  • 40 minutes to complete
  • Questions focus on:
    • Logical thinking
    • Problem-solving
    • Curriculum-based maths

The questions are designed so that every student can experience success, helping to build confidence and motivation. Question papers and instructions will be sent to teachers by email.

Round 2 – National Final

  • The top-performing students from each year group qualify
  • Approximately 30 students per grade level
  • Takes place at UCD this year
  • A set of more challenging questions
  • 40 minutes to complete
  • Determines:
    • Gold, Silver, and Bronze medal winners,

The final is followed by an award ceremony, bringing together students, teachers, and families.

Registration Deadline: 27 February 2026

  • Round 1 (In-School):
    Deadline: 20 March 2026
  • Results Announcement:
    Approximately 2–3 weeks after Round 1
  • National Final:
    Date: 9 May 2026
    Takes place at UCD this year

Prize Structure

  • Most successful participant from each class/year: 🥇 Gold Medal + €100 voucher + certificate
  • 2nd most successful participant from each class/year:🥈 Silver Medal + €75 voucher + certificate
  • 3nd most successful participant from each class/year:🥉 Bronze Medal + €50 voucher + certificate

Additional prizes may be awarded.
